The Princess Louise – London, England

I love public houses.  As far as I’m concerned, every trip to London, England needs to include a visit to one for a pint and a big plateful of sausage and mash.  But there are pubs and then there are pubs.  The latter are incredible, one-of-a-kind spots that serve great food and even better beer.  Like, for example, the Princess Louise on High Holborn.

A local may tell you that looks don’t matter when it comes to pubs – you take pride in your local neighborhood establishment and go for the company.  But I’m not sure that local has ever been inside the Princess Louise.  The interior is breathtaking – I actually commented to my companion that its beauty was almost surreal.  I wasn’t sure if I had stepped back in time or on to a movie set – but it’s fantastic 19th century decor, complete with dark wood, etched mirrors and patterned ceilings, will both charm you and, despite the extravagance, make you feel immediately at home.  And its recent refurbishment hasn’t messed with the vibe.  The Princess Louise is veritable 19th century “Cheers,” except, you know, in London – and you imagine it’s been that way since it opened its doors in 1893.  Even as a tourist, I kept waiting for someone to yell my name across the bar.

I went in for a beer.  That was supposed to be the extent of it.  But once we found a seat – the Princess Louise can be quite busy – we found every excuse to prolong our stay.  Another pint, then a third – and then a rib-sticking meal of some bangers and mash.  It was perfect – really, I could have stayed all night.  And, in fact, I pretty much did.
